Protein and fat diets, otherwise known as low-carb diets, are widely respected for their effectiveness at promoting rapid and sustained weight loss in a wide variety of dieters. The number of pure protein and fat diets on the market is not high, primarily because people want their carbs. However, if you have decided to make a positive change in your health and are ready to forsake carbs to do it, then the Eskimo Diet is the perfect diet for you.

About the Eskimo Diet

    The Eskimo Diet was has been in existence since the 1930s and was designed by Blake F. Donaldson, MD, a New York cardiologist. The Eskimo Diet is based on the eating habits of the Earth's remaining hunter-gatherer tribes. It was so modeled because traditional hunter-gatherer tribes have a relatively low onset rate for a number of unwelcome diseases, such as diabetes, arthritis, cancer, stroke and heart disease. The secret, it is hypothesized, is in their diet. Thus, emulating the diets of these individuals can confer the same health benefits without the hassle of having to live outdoors and chase your food.

Following the Eskimo Diet

    The Eskimo Diet is perhaps the most basic protein and fat diet on the market today. The diet can be summed up in just two words: eat meat. There are no gimmicks or carb counting. While on the Eskimo Diet, you will consume nothing but meat until you reach your target weight. After reaching your target weight, you may add some foods back into the diet, such as fruits and vegetables.

    The obvious objection to this diet is in its nutritional value. However, consider that Eskimos (among other tribes) have been eating in this style for thousands of years with no adverse effects. To the contrary, these tribesmen are generally in peak physical condition. To alleviate your concerns further, it might help to know that when the diet was first being developed, a doctor named Vilhjalmur Stefansson lived with the Inuit (another hunter-gatherer tribe) for a full year, consuming a diet like this. He was under medical surveillance throughout the entire time and suffered no ill effects.

Considerations

    The consumption of meat is the key to the Eskimo Diet. However, it is also recommended you consume 1/2 cup of black coffee with each meal. The caffeine will help to offset the initial lethargy that comes from switching to a low-carb diet. Additionally, Donaldson also recommends drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water between meals. Low-carb diets are diuretic in nature, which means that they cause your body to flush fluids. Replenishing those fluids in a timely fashion can do wonders for keeping mood up, even while you are striving to keep carbs low.

    While the Eskimo Diet is not for everyone, it is perhaps the most basic protein and fat diet ever invented. If you are looking to lose a few pounds, consider emulating some of the healthiest people in the world--forgo carbs entirely for a time and return to your primal hunter-gatherer nature.
