How to Colon Cleanse at Home

A colon cleanse is an effective way to remove toxins that have accumulated in your system. There are several ways to cleanse the colon. And while many people prefer colonic irrigation administered by a professional, it is possible to cleanse the colon at home. Regular colon cleansing can ease a variety of stomach ailments such as constipation. Moreover, it can reduce your chances of developing colon cancer and other digestive conditions.

Instructions

    1

Take herbal supplements. Several herbs and supplements function as a natural laxative and can effectively cleanse the colon. These include turkey rhubarb, which is an intestinal cleaner, and cascara sagrada, which is a mild colon cleanser. Other supplements proven to promote a healthy digestive tract include flax seeds, senna, worm seeds and olive leaf extracts.

    2

Use an enema to cleanse the colon. There are different types of enemas--water, clay and coffee. Unfortunately, enemas are messy and sometimes uncomfortable. What's more, they don't clean the entire colon. This type of colon cleanse primarily removes waste and toxins located in the lower intestines.

    3

Increase your fiber intake. A natural and simple way to complete a colon cleanse at home involves decreasing your fat and sodium intake, and increasing your fiber intake. Take 30 mg of fiber a day. Purchase fiber supplements, or increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. A high fiber diet eases constipates, helps with weight loss and reduces the risk of developing digestive problems.

    4

Complete a detoxification diet. Removing waste and harmful toxins from the body is one of the best ways to improve your overall health. Toxins can build up in the intestines or colon; and while colon cleanses rid the intestines of these toxins, a complete detoxification can eliminate toxins located throughout the body, and improve liver, kidney and heart function. Effective detoxification diets include a fruit and vegetable diets, vegetable broth and soup diets, and juice diets (see Resources below).

    5

Drink plenty of water. As waste and toxins leave your body, so do fluids. Keep your body hydrated during a colon cleanse by drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water a day.
