The National Institutes of Health estimate that over 5 million Americans suffer from fibromyalgia. More likely to affect women than men, the disorder creates chronic pain in the muscles and tender spots all over the body. Aside from muscular sensitivity, fibromyalgia may cause a number of other issues, such as depression, extreme fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome and memory loss. In some cases, physical or mental trauma triggers the disorder, while in other cases, problems develop over time. Although no cure currently exists, medications can help ease the discomfort of fibromyalgia. For those who prefer natural treatments, there are several options.

Eat a Healthy Diet

    Nourishing your body with wholesome foods ensures that you are getting the nutrients you need to maintain a properly functioning system. Snack on nuts and seeds for energy. Drink plenty of water to keep muscles hydrated. Do the best you can with your diet, but if you are still lacking needed nutrients, try adding supplements. Magnesium and vitamins D and B12 have been shown to increase energy and muscle strength.

Set Good Sleep Patterns

    You may feel exhausted but still have trouble falling or staying asleep. Make yourself go to bed at the same time each night, even if you do not feel tired. Set an alarm to make sure that you wake at the same time each morning. By creating this pattern and sticking with it, you can often trick your body into a better sleep mode.

Even if your case has a different cause, a therapist might be able to help you determine how best to handle the emotional symptoms attached to the disorder. Along with those sessions, try journaling about your physical and mental feelings each night as a way to release the tension. A positive attitude is the most useful weapon against fibromyalgia.
