Difference Between Myalgia & Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic medical condition that causes muscle pain, which is also known as myalgia. Myalgia is the technical term for muscle pain and may be associated with many medical conditions such as fibromyalgia, lupus, arthritis and illnesses such as the flu.

Types

Myalgia is a general medical term for muscle pain that occurs as the result of various conditions, one of which is fibromyalgia. Myalgia is a symptom of another condition, rather than a condition itself.

Features

Myalgia may affect the muscles and those ligaments, tendons and connective tissues attached to the muscles. In some cases, myalgia may affect the organs and bones. Fibromyalgis is characterized by muscle pain along with symptoms such as fatigue, sleeping problems and depression.

Time Frame

You may experience myalgia for a very short period of time if it occurs as a result of something like muscle strain, or myalgia may linger for months and years if it occurs as the result of a chronic condition such as fibromyalgia.

Identification

A physician may be able to determine the cause of myalgia during a routine physical examination. However, additional testing may be needed if the cause is not obvious. Fibromyalgia may be diagnosed if myalgia is accompanied by tender points and fatigue.

Treatment

Myalgia may be treated with ibuprofen or prescription pain medications. If fibromyalgia is present, medications such as Lyrica and Cymbalta may help with symptoms.
