Fibromyalgia is a disorder where the central nervous system becomes hypersensitive to pain, causing widespread pain throughout the body. Fibromyalgia waxes and wanes, meaning there are times when the symptoms can be worse than others. It is during these flare-ups that the symptoms are the most exacerbated.
Causes for Flare-ups
Factors such as stress, certain foods and the menstrual cycle are all responsible for flare-ups. These root causes vary from person to person. Changes in the weather and overexertion are also causes of fibromyalgia flare-ups.
Primary Symptoms
Widespread pain, fatigue, tingling in the extremities, muscle aches and problems with sleep are common symptoms of fibromyalgia.
Mental Issues
People with fibromyalgia sometimes suffer from cognitive dysfunction such as confusion and memory issues. Depression and sadness are also common.
Digestion Issues
Constipation and symptoms similar to irritable bowel syndrome are also common during fibromyalgia flare-ups.
Other Symptoms
Blurred vision, weight gain, TMJ problems and chest pain, although not as common, are also symptoms of a flare-up.
